In Short
The Ubunye Method is a guided meditation practice designed to support your emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing. It is not medical or psychological treatment and is not a replacement for care from a qualified professional.
If you are struggling with your mental health or wellbeing, please reach out to someone who can help. Crisis support information is provided further down this page.
What the Ubunye Method Is
The Ubunye Method is a guided meditation app. Its sessions, articles and other materials are provided for general education, reflection and personal wellbeing.
The practice draws on meditation, visualisation and reflective techniques. It is intended to help you create space, steady your attention, develop greater self-awareness and reconnect with yourself.
What It Is Not
Nothing within the Ubunye Method app, this website, or any Ubunye Method content should be considered medical advice, psychological advice, diagnosis or treatment.
Ubunye Method is not a healthcare provider. Using the app or its content does not create a practitioner-client, therapist-patient or doctor-patient relationship between you and Ubunye Method, its creators, contributors or anyone associated with it.
The Ubunye Method is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent anxiety, depression, insomnia, trauma, PTSD, addiction or any other medical or mental health condition. References to stress, sleep, anxiety, emotions or similar experiences relate to general wellbeing and personal development rather than clinical treatment.
Before You Begin
We encourage you to speak with a doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist or another qualified health professional before beginning the Ubunye Method if you:
- are currently receiving treatment for a mental health condition;
- have a history of trauma, dissociation, psychosis or severe anxiety;
- are taking medication that affects your mood, sleep or perception;
- have a medical condition that could be affected by meditation, deep relaxation or breathwork;
- are pregnant; or
- have any concern about whether meditation is appropriate for you.
Never stop, reduce or change prescribed medication or treatment because of anything you read, hear or experience through the Ubunye Method.
Always discuss changes to your treatment with the qualified healthcare professional responsible for your care.
Meditation Is Not Right for Everyone
We believe it is important to be open about the fact that people can respond differently to meditation.
Meditation is generally considered a wellbeing practice, but for some people it can bring up difficult emotions, memories or physical sensations. Some people may experience heightened anxiety, low mood, feelings of detachment from themselves or their surroundings, or the resurfacing of difficult past experiences.
If a session leaves you feeling distressed, disoriented, overwhelmed or noticeably worse than when you started, stop the session. You can return to it at another time if you feel comfortable doing so, or choose not to continue.
If uncomfortable feelings persist or concern you, please speak to a qualified health or mental health professional.
Listen to yourself and take care of your wellbeing first.
Your Safety During Guided Sessions
Our guided sessions are designed to help you relax deeply, and some people may fall asleep or become less aware of their surroundings while listening.
Never listen to a guided session while driving, cycling, operating machinery or doing anything else that requires your full attention.
Do not use guided sessions in or near water, at height, or anywhere where reduced awareness could put you or another person at risk.
Use the Ubunye Method somewhere safe and comfortable where you are able to remain still and undisturbed.
If You Are in Crisis
If you are in immediate danger, experiencing a mental health crisis, or thinking about harming yourself or someone else, please do not rely on the Ubunye Method app for help.
Please contact your local emergency services or a crisis support service.
